Who We Are

Every member of CCR is a North Lawndale resident, many of us from families that have called this community home for generations. We’re from here, we’re of here, and we’re building the future right here. Our kitchen is an extension of the same kitchens where some of us learned to cook at the elbows of our parents and grandparents in North Lawndale homes.

We’re neighbors and parents getting our first experience as business owners. All of us are united by a love for chocolate and a belief in what collective ownership can do for our neighborhood. When people buy our chocolate, they’re not just getting bold flavors — they’re supporting families, honoring heritage, and investing in the rebirth of a community too often defined by disinvestment.

Beyond delicious treats, jobs, and ownership, CCR is about bringing lifestyle equity to North Lawndale — creating spaces of joy, beauty, and celebration that our community has long been denied. Through chocolate, we reclaim pleasure as a form of justice, reminding our neighbors that we deserve not only survival, but sweetness.

Every Flavor is a Statement

Whether it’s peanut chocolate bark- or citrus-infused chocolate, or limited-edition “rebellion batches” that honor moments and movements, our products are designed to be as bold and connective as they are delicious. For us, chocolate is not just dessert — it’s a declaration!

Our Members

Brittney Smith

I am Brittney Smith, a lifelong resident of North Lawndale and a member of The Chicago Chocolate Rebellion. My passion for the work that we do comes from seeing the disparity between our community and those surrounding us. Our organization is dedicated to empowering the community by providing accessible and high-quality goods, ultimately enhancing the lives of residents.

Our business practices are designed to educate, expose, and exemplify needs-based best practices to our employees, members, and the broader community. We are committed to utilizing business revenue to cultivate long-term wealth and equity that remains within the community, fostering increased income and employment opportunities.

Michael Willett

Michael Willett is a business and technology leader with over 20 years of experience in operations, IT, and management. Michael’s passion for CCR comes from a love of chocolate and a belief that food, culture, and shared ownership can transform neighborhoods. Through CCR, he is working to fight displacement, create generational wealth, and bring people together around something both simple and powerful: great chocolate. By blending seasoned leadership with craft chocolate making, Michael is helping to build a business that is not only sustainable but deeply tied to the community it serves.

Valerie Stricklin

As a retired Registered Nurse, Valerie desired opportunities to grow and remain productive both personally and within the North Lawndale community. She has long wanted to establish her own business, for this reason, she enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to collaborate on a project that has aligned perfectly with my business development aspirations, cooperatives.

“Working within the CCR team has allowed me the opportunity to contribute to the development and marketing of an indulgence that I love, Chocolate, as well as learn so very much about its history. I take great pleasure and pride in contributing to the development of our chocolate delicacies, witness the growth of our team, view the North Lawndale community's joyful reactions to our presence and achieve my retirement goals.”

Shawna Smith Thornton

Shawna Smith Thornton is a dedicated IT Risk & Regulatory Manager with over a decade of experience leading high-impact projects in Project Management and Information Technology.

Shawna was drawn to CCR after learning about the CCR’s mission and the powerful story behind its chocolate—sourced from the African Diaspora and rooted in a legacy of resilience, community, and culture. For Shawna, CCR represented more than just a business; it was a movement she felt deeply connected to, aligning with her values around equity, empowerment, and heritage.

Vanessa Thomas

Vanessa Thomas is a phlebotomist/ patient care technician for over 7 years. Vanessa joined CCR because of the love of chocolate she has. Joining CCR she’s able to gain a deeper understanding of chocolate, from learning where it’s from to learning how to make it. Vanessa takes joy in helping build a business that is tied to the community. With CCR she’s working to create generational wealth.

Adjua Adjei-Danso

Adjua has always been drawn to chocolate – because of her sweet tooth, but also because she is from Ghana, which produces about 20% of the world’s cocoa. A proud North Lawndale resident, Adjua is excited to be part of a neighborhood led and focused business in the Chicago Chocolate Rebellion (CCR). Moreover, Adjua relishes being a part of CCR and its opportunity to showcase the power of global connections; we use chocolate to highlight connections across the globe – the luxurious treats created on the west side of Chicago have their beginnings in the work many farmers lovingly do around the world. CCR is proud to name and uplift the work of all our farmer partners.
